John's thoughts on his string choice...

In my search for the brightest set of bronze strings, I tried some old Rotosounds in black and red packaging that I'd somehow managed to save for years. They sounded really good: clear and well-balanced, yet with a rich tone.

The company was amused to hear that someone still had strings that dated back so far, but assured me that after several package redesigns, their new strings were still the same quality. Rotosound bass guitar strings have a high reputation worldwide, which may have overshadowed their guitar strings.

James How, who founded the company in the 1950s, designed a new type of string winding machine that was a step ahead of the industry and all strings are produced with the same precision.

In addition to the phosphor bronze round windings, Rotosound also makes guitar strings in the piano wire design.

This means that the winding wire stops just before the ball, leaving some of the core wire exposed, leaving only the core wire in contact with the saddle wire. These strings are called "Country Gold."

It's actually an old idea and I have a feeling the very first steel strings used on guitars in the 1800s were like that.

The gauges for both types of strings are 060 to 018 wound, and 026 to 008 plain.
