What is MIDI and what can you do with it?

Wat is MIDI en wat kan je er mee doen?

Mathijs Van der Steege |

The theory about MIDI:

MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. It is a form of digital communication between electronic musical instruments. Most musical instruments use the MIDI protocol. The instrument communicates with the connected device through the use of MIDI. MIDI is not a sound that goes back and forth but commands. For example, a MIDI keyboard or other instrument can give a command to a VSTi (Virtual Instrument) in a computer. For example, the command can be “play note C3”, the keyboard will then pass this on to the computer as soon as it is pressed. You can often add commands to a specific button in the program itself.

How do I connect my instrument via MIDI?

You can connect your MIDI instrument (in most cases a keyboard) to your PC or Mac via MIDI cables, USB cable or even wirelessly. Wireless connection is only possible with special equipment. In most cases the instrument is connected to the PC or Mac via the USB cable. The keyboards in the higher segment have both a MIDI input and output. You can use the MIDI in and output, for example, to connect an extra keyboard to the current keyboard.

What do I use MIDI for?

MIDI can be used, for example, to record a piece of music in a DAW (digital audio workstation). The most commonly used are Cubase, Fruity Loops (FL Studio) and Logic Pro in the program and then you can play it via the connected instrument (usually a keyboard or piano). Make sure that the correct drivers are installed. Without the correctly installed driver, the PC or Mac often does not know which commands the midi keyboard transmits. Drivers can always be found on the manufacturer's website.
