Description

Kangaba is the historic capital of the Mandingo Empire, located 90 kilometers from Bamako, near the Guinean border. Kangaba's instruments are all made traditionally. They are carved from the finest wood by skilled smiths and assembled with natural goatskin. The Kangaba drums convey the original vibration, warmth, and power of the Mandingo Empire. Since 2000, Kangaba (with the participation of its artists) has been planting a variety of trees used for instrument production.

The professional instruments are made of dugura, teak, and boumou wood. These woods have an incomparable sound and are found only in this region of West Africa, between Mali and Guinea. The hides are natural and untreated; they are simply shaved by hand with a razor. The strings are nylon and specially designed by Kangaba.
